Bug Ben with your postal questions, he is hard to stump.
We dug up Ben Franklin, the 1st Postmaster of the USPS, to help us out with some of the grave issues facing the postal industry today.
Dear Ben:
I have noticed that some of the metered mail I receive has half of the much-touted two-dimensional bar code missing, how do they get away with that? I have to print the whole indicia and full barcode which looks to me like it uses a lot more ink.
Incensed in Indio
Dear Incensed:
Don’t get mad, get even! The bar codes that you see are legitimate and represent the latest in technology from the USPS. They are called IBI light, because indeed they do use less ink, which will save money. You can get even by getting a new IM (Intelligent Mail®) machine from Hasler, who provides the first, small to mid sized machines on the market that offer IBI light. With the money you save on ink, you can buy more postage, which will make everyone happy.

Dear Ben:
When do I need to start using the Intelligent Mail® Bar Code and what is the benefit to me? We already have two perfectly good bar codes that have worked fine for years. Is this one of those change for change sake deals you have cooked up?

Dear Ruffled:
You have some good questions, the answers for which I will refer you to an article in this newsletter about the IMB
However, I will provide you with some top line information here. Implementation for the IMB is May 2009, but you may continue using the older DPBC technology until may 2011. But why delay? What is in it for you my friend are a host of benefits too numerous to list here, but I will tell you it should save you money while reducing your UAA mail. Now that is a change I am happy to take credit for.
